Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for supporting shot firing
   • Access, interpret and apply blasting documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, confirm and apply shotfiring requirements, shift briefings, handover details and/or work orders before proceeding
   • Access, interpret and apply environmental, geological, survey, and weather conditions data
   • Identify, manage and report all potential hazards risks and environmental issues
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the work activities
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Resolve coordination requirements with others prior to commencing and during work activities
   • Identify and test the explosives and accessories to be used
   • Check blast holes
2. Provide support at the blast site
   • Prepare and mix explosives
   • Pick up, carry and transport explosives and accessories on the shot site
   • Assist in securing and isolating blast area
   • Prime, load, stem and tie in the explosive
   • Carry out site clean-up operations
   • Prepare and process reports and/or records of support activities as directed

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

demonstrates completion of supporting shotfiring operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

checking blast holes

identifying and testing explosives and accessories

preparing and mixing explosives

handling and transporting explosives and accessories

securing and isolating blast area

priming, loading, stemming and tying in the explosive

site clean-up

processing reports and/or records

blast plan

site security plan

types, physical and technical characteristics, uses and limitations of explosives

site geological and survey data

site environmental requirements and constraints
