Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct tack coat spraying operations
   • Access, interpret and apply tack coat spraying operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements
   • Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
   • Select and check for faults tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Prepare for spraying operations
   • Carry out pre-operational plant and equipment checks
   • Check tank for cleanliness and contaminants prior to filling, and ensure transfer connections are completed and fully functional
   • Conduct loading and unloading operations
   • Ensure spray tank is filled with adequate materials to perform spray operations
   • Identify application rate and translate into the relevant travel speed and pump characteristics where necessary
   • Select jets and fit to spray bar
3. Spray tack coat
   • Select and modify tack coating spraying techniques to meet changing conditions and surface types
   • Conduct, control and monitor spraying operations of tack coat sprayer and ensure that materials are sprayed to specification
   • Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
   • Complete work plan within the operating capacities of the allocated equipment
4. Operate hand lance
   • Determine situations where hand spraying is required
   • Set spray jets for job
   • Conduct, control and monitor hand spraying operations and ensure that materials are sprayed to specification
   • Clean and store hand spraying equipment after use
5. Carry out operator maintenance and housekeeping
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding
   • Clean spray bars and lances and ensure jets are free of contaminants
   • Empty and clean tank of bituminous products
   • Carry out routine operational servicing and lubrication tasks
   • Carry out minor maintenance
   • Maintain records including identification of potential and current equipment problems
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Carry out housekeeping requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of tack coat spraying operations including:

selecting, using and maintaining required tools, plant and equipment

spraying of tack coat including, selecting, controlling and monitoring spraying technique in response to conditions and surface type

operating a hand lance

works effectively with others to undertake and complete tack coat spraying operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems such as signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone

demonstrates completion of conducting tack coat spraying operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

identifying, reporting and recording hazards and risks

tack coating a minimum of 500m2 of an existing pavement prior to asphalting using the spray bar, completed in a minimum of two separate runs

a minimum of two (2) areas of at least 20m2 to be tack coated using a hand lance

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting tack coat spraying operations through:

project quality requirements

housekeeping

equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

operational and maintenance procedures

site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

processes for the calculation of material requirements, application rates and travel speed

safety data sheets and materials handling methods
