Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient hand spreading of asphalt including:

selecting and using required tools and equipment

hand spreading asphalt to the required level and even finish

constructing joints to correct level

repairing low spots and high spots

identifying and reporting faults in the mat

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the hand spreading of asphalt that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems such as signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone

demonstrates completion of hand spreading asphalt that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

identifying, reporting and recording hazards and risks

a minimum of 5m2 of asphalt (per patch) to line and level is to be hand spread without segregation:

two patches over 50mm thick, each with a different type of asphalt

two patches under 50mm thick, each with a different type of asphalt

work with a paver to lay a minimum of 100 lineal metres of longitudinal joint and two transverse joints


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of hand spreading asphalt through:

applying legislative, organisational and site requirements and procedures for:

site and equipment safety requirements

hand spreading asphalt

the properties of asphalt

calculation of material requirements

project quality requirements

housekeeping

equipment types, characteristics and limitations

applying operational and maintenance procedures

applying site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

AAPA code of practice for working with SBS modified binders

safety data sheets and materials handling methods

implementing JSAs/JSEA/safe work method statements
