Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct profile planer operations
   • Access, interpret and apply profile planer operations documentation and ensure the work activity is complaint
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements
   • Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
   • Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Conduct profile planer pre-operational checks
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
   • Check profile planer controls and functions, including implements or other attachments, brakes and manoeuvrability for serviceability and rectify and report any faults
3. Operate profile planer
   • Drive and operate profile planer to achieve optimum output
   • Operate profile planer to remove material
4. Select, remove and fit attachments
   • Select attachment for the task
   • Remove and fit attachment
   • Test attachment to ensure correct fitting and operation
   • Use attachment
   • Clean and store removed attachments
5. Relocate the profile planer
   • Prepare profile planer for relocation
   • Move profile planer safely between worksites
6. Carry out profile planer operator maintenance
   • Park profile planer safely, prepare for maintenance and shutdown
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding
   • Remove defective parts and replace safely and effectively
   • Carry out regular programmed maintenances tasks
7. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean, check, and store profile planer, tools and equipment and conduct operator maintenance
   • Carry out housekeeping requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient conducting of profile planer operations: including:

selecting and using required tools and equipment

pre-start, start-up, park and shutdown

operate profile planer to achieve specified tolerances, required line and level

select, remove and fit attachments

relocate the profile planer

maintain profile planer

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the profile planer operations that meets all of the required outcomes, including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems such as signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone

demonstrates completion of conducting profile planer operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

identifying, reporting and recording hazards and risks

conduct of profile planer operations in a minimum of two (2) different material types/surfaces types and are to include the mandatory tasks of:

removal/excavation of materials to a thickness and a line/level

loading of trucks

stockpiling

operations including:

asphalt pavement

milling

edge planning

interpreting engineering drawings and sketches

applying and monitoring operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures

applying site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

materials safety data sheets and materials handling methods

monitoring project quality requirements

preparing and/or implementing JSAs/JSEA/safe work method statements
