Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct asphalt paver operations
   • Access, interpret and apply asphalt paver operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Confirm and apply environmental protection and safety requirements
   • Obtain, interpret and implement traffic management signage requirements
   • Determine material to be laid and handling procedures to be employed
   • Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Set up asphalt paver
   • Carry out start-up, park, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
   • Adjust, change or inflate tyres
   • Set equipment to correct levels to enable the laying of materials
   • Set heating controls for the screed board
   • Install feeder bin where required
   • Check materials spreading controls for correct operation
3. Operate asphalt paver
   • Drive and operate equipment
   • Engage delivery vehicles smoothly without bumping
   • Maintain appropriate uniform speed during spreading operations
   • Monitor and maintain asphalt mix
   • Maintain communication with screed hand to ensure job is progressing satisfactorily and that materials are being spread to specifications
   • Monitor movement of the plant to ensure safety of asphalt crew
4. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Prepare machine for maintenance
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
   • Process written maintenance records
5. Relocate paver
   • Prepare paver for relocation
   • Drive paver safely on highways and construction sites
6. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Carry out housekeeping requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of asphalt paver operations including:

selecting and using required tools and equipment

determining material to be laid

setting-up asphalt paver

operating asphalt paver

carrying out operator maintenance

moving/relocating paver

works effectively with others to undertake and complete asphalt paver operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems such as signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone

communicating with screed hand to ensure that materials are spread to specifications

demonstrates completion of conducting asphalt paver operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

identifying, reporting and recording hazards and risks

conducting paver operations in a minimum of two (2) different asphalt types/surface types, constructed to required thickness, uniformity, line and level, on both matching and unsupported edge in accordance with project specifications and/or work instructions, for the following:

three (3) longitudinal joints (of at least 100m) to be

six (6) transverse joints

five (5) sections of straight paving (one of at least 100 linear metres)

three (3) intersections

operations to include residential, commercial and highway projects; and

material delivery through the paver is to include manual and automatic control

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting asphalt paver operations through:

applying legislative, organisational and site requirements and procedures for:

site and equipment safety requirements

asphalt paving techniques

asphalt paving operations

asphalt strength and performance characteristics

edge and joint treatments

housekeeping

equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

applying and monitoring operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures

applying site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

applying processes for the calculation of material requirements, mix, application rates, uniformity and travel speed

safety data sheets and materials handling methods

applying project quality requirements

preparing and/or implementing JSAs/JSEA/safe work method statements
