Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of producing asphalt products including:

select and use relevant tools and equipment safely

identify and report on hazards related to the worksite and work activity

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the production of asphalt products that meets all of the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to resolve coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities

demonstrates completion of producing asphalt products that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

completion of programming and planning of the mix specification for three (3) separate mixes, with the temperature and mix produced within tolerance for three hundred (300) tonne of mix, without plant down time


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in producing asphalt products through:

accessing, interpreting and applying legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

site and equipment safety requirements

conducting plant operations

heating bitumen and controlling temperature

batch testing

calculation of material requirements and application rates

housekeeping

complying with site and equipment safety requirements

using batching systems

understanding mix specifications (temperatures and tolerances)

understanding production requirements

understanding bituminous materials and their characteristics

understanding aggregate and sand properties and conformance

using additives

understanding the equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

complying with the operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures

complying with safety data sheets and materials handling methods

preparing and/or implementing JSAs/JSEA/safe work method statements
