Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to place and form concrete kerb, channel and fixtures
   • Access, interpret and apply concrete kerb, channel and fixtures documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
2. Set out and prepare for construction/ installation
   • Identify and protect existing services to prevent damage
   • Set out location of kerb, channel and/or fixtures to dimensions from drawings and specifications or to pre-set pegs
   • Set out driveways and other inverts
   • Check grades to ensure correct fall
   • Construct formwork and check to ensure compliance with specifications
   • Complete services and conduit preparation in accordance with relevant procedures
3. Form kerb and barrier strips
   • Maintain vertical and horizontal alignment during concrete placement
   • Place concrete accurately to string line
   • Maintain concrete to specified standard
   • Mix and apply mortar at quality and quantity to achieve specified finish
4. Pour concrete to installed formwork
   • Place and compact concrete into formwork
   • Finish surface to alignment specifications
   • Remove face formwork without damage to concrete following concrete set
5. Finish kerbs, channels and fixtures
   • Finish job to shape in accordance with specifications or to the relevant Australian standard
   • Finish concrete to specified quality and texture
   • Position expansion, construction and dowel joints to specification
   • Cure and protect finished work during process
6. Install pre-cast concrete units
   • Prepare base section and finish to specification for pre-cast unit installation
   • Install and join pre-cast concrete units
7. Repair kerb, gutters and median, barrier strips
   • Identify damaged areas, assess repair requirements and carefully remove or repair damaged section
   • Set up formwork or slip form machine and use to replace removed section
   • Place concrete accurately to correct alignment using concrete to the specified mix
   • Finish concrete to specification matching the shape of the kerb or gutter in place
   • Clear, backfill and finish area
8. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean, maintain, check and store tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of placing and forming concrete kerbs, channels and fixtures including:

accessing, interpreting and applying documentation relevant to the placing and forming concrete kerb, channel and fixtures

identifying and applying relevant drawings and job specifications to all work activities

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage requirements

selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues and ground conditions

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the placing and forming of concrete kerbs, channels and fixtures that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

monitoring hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process

demonstrates completion of place and form concrete kerb, channel and fixtures that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

setting out and preparing for construction/installation in compliance with drawings and specifications requirements

forming kerb and barrier strips by placing concrete and applying mortar to specifications requirements

pouring concrete into installed formwork

finishing kerbs, channels and fixtures

installing pre-cast concrete units and finishing to specifications

repairing kerb, gutters and median, barrier strips

clearing, backfilling and finishing work areas

clearing work area and disposing of, recycling or storing materials

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in placing and forming concrete kerb, channel and fixtures through:
