Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to use concreting materials and equipment
   • Access, interpret and apply concrete materials and equipment documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
   • Select and check for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
2. Identify and select hand and power tools
   • Identify and select hand and power tools, according to their functions, operations, limitations and ability to meet the job requirement
   • Check lubricants, hydraulic fluid and water
   • Check tools, including leads and hoses, for tags, serviceability and safety, and report any faults
   • Check and maintain power tool guards, retaining bolts, couplings, gauges and controls in accordance with manufacturer recommendations
   • Select equipment to hold or support material during operation
3. Use tools
   • Use hand tools appropriate to the task and materials
   • Use power tools for their intended purpose safely and effectively
   • Sharpen and maintain tools
4. Identify, select and use plant and equipment
   • Check plant and equipment for safety and report faults
   • Select and use plant and equipment matched to the work task
   • Check lubricants, hydraulic fluid and water
   • Maintain plant and equipment
5. Clean up
   • Clear the work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle material
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and standard work practices

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient use of concrete materials and equipment including:

accessing, interpreting and applying documentation relevant to using concreting materials and equipment

identifying and applying relevant specifications to all work activities

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

identifying, obtaining, confirming and implementing signage requirements

selecting and checking for faults all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the use of concrete materials and equipment in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

monitoring movements and hazards and identifying and communicating changes to the work environment during the work process

demonstrates completion of the use of concrete materials and equipment that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

identifying and verifying use for concrete materials including:

aggregates

cement

form release agents

non-toxic materials, including general concreting materials

sand

water

identifying and verifying concrete material components including:

bar chairs

bracing

plastic membrane

reinforcement mesh

spacers

steel and timber formwork

identifying and using the correct handling procedures for the following:

calculation of quantities

manual handling, including:

carrying materials using correct lifting techniques

control of waste

using pallets

Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

protection of materials

stacking and storing of materials

identifying, selecting and using concrete tools and carrying out required checks prior to use including:

floats

shovels

screeds

vibrating equipment

using relevant tools appropriate to the task and materials

identifying, selecting and using and maintaining plant and equipment

clearing work area and disposing of, recycling or storing materials cleaning, checking, maintaining and storing plant, tools and equipment

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in using concreting materials and equipment through:
