Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to conduct thermo plastic road marking operations
   • Access, interpret and apply thermo plastic road marking operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work instructions before proceeding
   • Identify and implement traffic management signage requirements
   • Select and check for faults plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks
   • Identify, address and report hazards, risks and environmental issues
   • Select and wear correct personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
2. Prepare surface and set out
   • Clear area of dirt, debris and other contaminants
   • Identify location for line marking and set out with control points
   • Spot straight lines and curves in preparation for marking
   • Remove pre-existing visible marks/lines where required
   • Prime marked location for lines in readiness for road marking application
3. Prepare marking materials
   • Mix and prepare marking material
   • Heat material to manufacturer’s specifications to allow easy and consistent application
   • Transfer marking material safely to applicator container
4. Apply road marking materials
   • Use equipment with the correct movement and pressure
   • Apply road marking material to the surface providing an even coverage
   • Identify and correct defects in the thermo plastic material
   • Maintain equipment
5. Measure work
   • Assess, record and report work outcomes
   • Calculate and quantify amount of line marking completed
   • Identify and report non-conforming work
6. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Carry out housekeeping activities

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete thermo plastic road marking operations that meet all of the required outcomes including:

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and systems such as signage to advise others of work activity and exclusion zone

demonstrates completion of conducting thermo plastic road marking operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

selecting and inspecting for faults in plant, tools and equipment

identifying, reporting and recording hazards, risks and environmental issues

removing dirt, debris and contaminants from the area

preparing the marking materials by mixing and heating materials appropriately

completing new lines for a minimum of five (5) kilometres of each of the following to the specified tolerance:

centre line (to include separation line, barrier line one direction and barrier line both directions)

edge lines

re-marking over existing lines for a minimum of five (5) kilometres of each of the following to the specified tolerance:

centre line (to include separation line, barrier line one direction and barrier line both directions)

edge lines

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in conducting thermo plastic road marking operations through:

accessing, interpreting and applying legislative, organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

work, health and safety

equipment operation

operational, maintenance and basic diagnostics

JSAs/safe work method statements

housekeeping

identifying and applying road markings

identifying equipment types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

complying with project quality requirements

identifying and using civil construction terminology

complying with site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

applying thermo plastic road marking activities and techniques

using thermo plastic materials

complying with safety data sheets and materials handling methods

applying processes for the calculation of material requirements, application rates and travel speed

being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
