Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan for inspection, testing and maintenance of joints on diesel engine systems
   • Access, interpret, inspect, test and maintain joints on diesel engine systems apply documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, interpret and clarify, confirm and apply verbal and written work instructions
   • Conduct a toolbox talk with others at the site prior to commencing and during work activities
   • Identify, address and report potential hazards, risks and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for an emergency
2. Prepare for inspection, testing and maintenance of joints on diesel engine systems
   • Coordinate activities with others prior to commencement of, during, and on completion of the work activity
   • Identify and obtain items and tools required for the safe, effective and efficient conduct of the tasks.
   • Select and wear personal protection equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Access, interpret and apply equipment pre-start procedures
   • Access and apply isolation and lock-out of all equipment

   • Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment
   • Report issues identified with plant, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of the inspection, testing and maintenance of joints on diesel engine systems including:

applying operational safety requirements

accessing, interpreting and applying technical information

inspecting and testing engine and ancillary systems and diagnosing and recording existing or identified faults

routine engine and ancillary system maintenance

overhaul of engine and ancillary systems works effectively with others to undertake and complete the inspection, testing and maintenance of joints on diesel engine systems that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

demonstrates completion of inspecting, testing and maintaining joints on diesel engine systems that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

selecting and using appropriate inspection and testing methods

diagnosing and rectifying faults

completing routine maintenance

completing overhaul

completing and maintaining inspection, testing and maintenance records
