Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for mobilisation to site
   • Access, interpret and apply mobilise equipment and materials documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Prepare vehicle, vehicle kit, camping equipment, First Aid kit, survival kit and personal equipment for remote assignment
2. Carry out pre-start and routine checks
   • Carry out pre-start, daily engine, fuel and fluid level checks
   • Observe safety procedures while checking hydraulic systems, high-pressure air, electrical circuits and batteries
3. Proceed to exploration site
   • Drive vehicle in accordance with policies and procedures and State regulation
   • Apply safe driving techniques to all vehicles
   • Position/arrange loads so they will be carried in a safe manner to prevent loss/damage to vehicle or cargo
   • Use a range of load restraints/lashings to secure various loads to a vehicle.
   • Identify and assess ground conditions before driving vehicle across country
   • Drive vehicle off road in a range of terrains
   • Demonstrate stall recovery
   • Use maps, communication and navigation aids/equipment
   • Identify and avoid potential/actual hazards on the route
   • Carry out emergency procedures in accordance with manufacturer’s and/or company requirements
   • Recognise and demonstrate basic survival techniques for a range of situations
   • Communicate information to base or other vehicles
   • Complete move to site and all required documentation
4. Carry out basic operator maintenance
   • Identify hazards, and methods of minimising hazards, in conducting maintenance, particularly in the field
   • Carry out minor repairs/replacements as required in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications
   • Overcome minor breakdowns/bogging using recovery techniques
   • Carry out vehicle washing and housekeeping regularly according to site requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant, documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of mobilising equipment and materials including:

applying communication and recording skills

performing manual and mechanical handling

driving laden vehicles (on and off road)

performing basic maintenance skills

applying knots, load securing devices and attachment points for loaded vehicles

applying recovery techniques for bogged plant/vehicles

acquiring required licenses and permits

applying diagnostic and troubleshooting procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the mobilisation of materials and equipment that meets all of the required outcomes including:

communicating information to base or other vehicles

demonstrates completion of mobilising equipment and materials that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing start up and safety checks according to organisation and supplier/manufacturer’s specifications

driving with the minimum of damage to vehicles, equipment and structures

operating vehicle in a safe manner in a range of conditions, including on and off road

navigating to destination site for delivery of equipment and materials

performing routine checks and maintenance, and minor repairs

using written and verbal communication to coordinate activity

completing all required documentation

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of mobilising equipment and materials through:

identifying reasons loads shift and methods of preventing shifting

identifying number and types of lashings to apply, fixing points and basic knots

ensuring safe carrying of loads

applying a range of acquired safety and survival skills

showing a basic knowledge of hydraulic systems, components and cleanliness requirements

showing a basic knowledge of internal combustion motors and the major components
