Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for the control of emergencies and critical situations
   • Access, interpret and apply control of drilling emergencies and critical situations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
   • Identify, establish and maintain communication systems with other personnel during the drilling emergency
2. Contribute to the control of critical situations
   • Identify and maintain safe working practices
   • Interpret/apply national standards and code of practice for manual handling
   • Identify and initiate actions in response to developing, emerging and existing critical situations
   • Activate relevant alarms
   • Identify, interpret and apply processes and systems to quickly and competently close the well
3. and flow control head
   • Provide assistance in the application of First Aid and medivac procedures
   • Monitor the situation and initiate actions to minimise risks to personnel, environment, process, plant, tools and equipment
   • Maintain verbal and written reporting requirements of critical situations
   • Participate in debriefs and complete written records/documentation
4. Respond to emergencies in other areas
   • Identify and maintain safe working practices
   • Identify and initiate actions in response to developing, emerging and existing critical situations
   • Activate relevant alarms
   • Provide clear, concise and accurate information in relation to the emergency
   • Adhere to authorised emergency procedures
   • Monitor the situation and initiate actions to minimise risks to personnel, environment, process, plant, tools and equipment
   • Participate in debriefs and complete written records/documentation
5. Participate in fire drills
   • Recognise and comply with fire alarm signals
   • Attend and participate in emergency drills and safety meetings
   • Operate portable extinguishing equipment, fire hose and nozzles
   • Identify and comply with fire team instructions
   • Identify assigned fire/boat station and follow procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures to contribute to the control of emergencies and critical situations

implements requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective control of emergencies and critical situations including:

identifying effects of changes of ambient conditions on operations

reading and interpreting drawings and manuals

operating equipment

applying manual handling techniques

works with others to undertake the control of emergencies and critical situations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating to confirm work/plans/specifications

demonstrates completion of the contribution to the control of emergencies and critical situations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

contributing to the control of critical situations including:

activating relevant alarms

quickly and competently closing the well

initiating actions in response to critical situations

responding to emergencies

applying safe manual handling techniques when lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying or restraining objects

participating in fire drills

providing assistance in the application of first aid and medivac procedures
