Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare for aided rescue
  2. Assess incident scene and plan rescue strategy
  3. Assess threats/dangers to mine personnel and rescuers
  4. Locate and access emergency breathing apparatus caches
  5. Identify the need for, and organise, additional rescue resources and equipment
  6. Refer to the mine plan and identify escape route and alternative escape route from the incident scene to fresh air base
  7. Clarify and confirm the rescue strategy
  8. Extricate and evacuate to fresh air
  9. Maintain communication with emergency control and fresh air base personnel
  10. Continue to monitor physical and emotional condition of mine workers and other rescue team members and provide support
  11. Monitor air/oxygen usage and adjust rate of travel, where necessary
  12. Ensure efficient changeover/refill of self-rescuer/breathing apparatus
  13. Participate in post-incident debrief
  14. Plan and prepare for aided rescue
  15. Assess incident scene and plan rescue strategy
  16. Extricate and evacuate to fresh air
  17. Participate in post-incident debrief

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of providing aided rescue to endangered personnel including:

obtaining and interpreting incident information and data

managing risks

interpreting and responding to adverse environmental conditions

identifying alternative escape routes

identifying and reporting on mine conditions

identifying and complying with hygiene standards

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the provision of aided rescue to endangered personnel that meets all the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to coordinate work activities within a team

demonstrates completion of providing aided rescue to endangered personnel that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

inspecting, putting on and using breathing apparatus

reading mine plans and navigating in mine

accessing and using self-escape equipment

accessing, interpreting and applying data from monitoring systems and equipment

operating hand held monitoring equipment

observing and reporting mine conditions

identifying alternative escape routes


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in providing aided rescue to endangered personnel through:

types and causes of incidents in underground mines

alarms and indicators of mine incidents

accessing and interpreting geological and survey data

effects of hot and humid atmospheres

the location and distribution of caches

trigger points to initiate emergency response to alarms

types of barricades and applying barricading methods

the location and purpose of a place of safety

evacuation resources and equipment

using guidance systems and markers

mine emergency plans

implications of lack of visibility

escape routes and alternative escape routes

basic ventilation systems

types and effects of mine gases

travel speeds

monitoring systems

communication systems
