Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to respond to local emergencies and incidents
   • Access, interpret and apply local emergencies and incidents documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Identify, establish and maintain communication systems with other personnel during the emergency
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
   • Locate, obtain and test emergency equipment
   • Identify, clarify and confirm nature, scope and location of the emergency or incident
   • Assess emergency or incident and determine appropriate course of action
2. Notify appropriate personnel of emergency or incident
3. Respond to emergency or incident situations
   • Identify, confirm and follow emergency evacuation procedures
   • Coordinate and control response to emergency or incident
   • Identify risks and/or hazards and communicate with signs, signals or barriers
   • Select and use emergency equipment
   • Take local measures to reduce impact of emergency or incident
   • Continually monitor and assess emergency situation and changes in circumstances
   • Communicate requests for further assistance or evacuation to emergency personnel
   • Control the emergency or incident situation until formal relief is notified/received

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of responding to local emergencies and incidents including:

identifying hazards

identifying, analysing and reporting emergencies/incidents

monitoring and assessing emergency situations

assessing situation and making decisions

assessing and managing risks

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the response to local emergencies and incidents that meets all the required outcomes including:

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

communicating clearly and concisely with others to coordinate work activities

demonstrates completion of the response to local emergencies and incidents that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

reading and interpreting site plans

administering initial response First Aid

locating and wearing personal protective equipment

following emergency evacuation procedures

applying fire fighting techniques

isolating sources of danger and placing signage/barriers/signals as necessary

selecting and using emergency equipment

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when responding to local emergencies and incidents:

statutory compliance

site emergency and incident situations

initial response First Aid

accessing and interpreting geological and survey data

using site communication systems

using personal protective equipment

understanding fire fighting techniques
