Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare to operate personnel and materials hoists
   • Access, interpret and apply load handling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret clarify and confirm work instructions including shift changeover details, quality requirements, plans and specifications
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Arrange signals and communication with other workers including barricade requirements
   • Identify, address and report potential hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Identify materials, equipment and tools required to complete work, check for serviceability, and report faults
   • Conduct equipment pre-start checks
2. Prepare personnel/material hoist
   • Inspect personnel cage/platform structure and SWL plate
   • Assess weather conditions for safe hoist operation
   • Conduct test run through full height of travel without a load, check mast and wall bolting
   • Check all safety systems including braking system
   • Ensure that attachment is lowered to ground safely and does not crush feet of personnel
   • Check personnel’s lanyards/harnesses and anchors comply with relevant Australian standards and are securely fitted to railing/anchor points and personnel harness attachment points
3. Operate personnel/material hoist
   • Lift personnel cage/platform and test all equipment in a range positions, operating controls smoothly and carefully, considering working clearances and potential crushing risks to workers
   • Travel personnel cage/platform as low as possible and operating in low gear and low speed, ensuring maximum stability at all times
   • Remain seated at controls whenever workers are on/in attachment and in the raised position
   • Communicate with personnel cage/platform using recommended signals
4. Perform post-operation activities
   • Empty and park attachment in designated area
   • Clean, remove, inspect and store attachments and equipment correctly
   • Clean and leave attachment parked on level, secure, and safe position
   • Report location and state/condition of personnel cage/platform before going off shift
   • Complete all required written records and documents

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies applicable documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient operation of personnel and material hoists including:

keeping plant and equipment records

complying with environmental requirements

working at heights

applying isolation procedures

reading and appreciating ground conditions

conducting work area risk assessment techniques

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the operation of personnel and material hoists that meet all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communication systems and techniques to effectively coordinate and communicate information to others

considering working clearances and potential crushing risks to workers

reporting location and state/condition of personnel cage/platform

demonstrates completion of operating personnel and material hoists that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

conducting test run through full height of travel without a load, check mast and wall bolting

checking all safety systems including braking system

checking personnel’s lanyards/harnesses and anchors

lifting personnel cage/platform

testing all equipment in a range positions

operating controls smoothly and carefully

travel personnel cage/platform as low as possible and operating in low gear and low speed

ensuring maximum stability at all times
