Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for working in the drilling Industry
   • Access, interpret and apply relevant drilling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
2. Perform safe manual handling
   • Assess load to be moved
   • Assess and plan stability of the lift, transport route and lay down position
   • Use manual handling techniques and aids safely and effectively and seek assistance where required
3. Routinely practice good housekeeping
   • Keep all housekeeping areas clean, neat and tidy
   • Keep all tools and equipment clean and stored in the correct place
   • Identify and report potential hazards from poor housekeeping
   • Implement routine of good housekeeping practices
   • Report equipment problems verbally or in writing
4. Complete pre-start checks
   • Walk around plant/equipment/vehicle checking all items are serviceable and in good condition
   • Check and top up fluids as required
   • Check all guards and safety devices are in place and serviceable
   • Ensure all personnel are clear or in a safe position before starting
   • Complete required written records and reporting
5. Refuel vehicles and plant
   • Enforce no-smoking zone while refuelling
   • Select correct fuel
   • Refuel engine
   • Clean up any spills
   • Leave fuel storage area clean and tidy
   • Note remaining fuel supply
   • Complete written records/reporting
6. Drive vehicle
   • Check vehicle roadworthiness, load distribution and security before starting
   • Identify potential vehicle hazards from road trip/load and implement hazard minimisation procedures
   • Plan trip to maximise safety and minimise cost
   • Drive vehicle in compliance with local conditions and road/site rules
   • Correctly park and secure vehicle
   • Correctly change wheel as required

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of working effectively in the Drilling Industry including:

planning and preparing for manual handling

identifying hazards

reporting equipment problems

works effectively with others to undertake and complete working effectively in the Drilling Industry that meet all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communication techniques and equipment to convey information to others

communicating hazards and determining elimination or control of hazards

organising work activities to meet task requirements

demonstrates completion of working effectively in the drilling industry that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing manual handling

completing pre-start checks

refuelling vehicles and plant

driving, parking and securing vehicle

changing a wheel

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when working effectively in the drilling Industry:

accessing, interpreting and applying organisation and site requirements and procedures for:

hazard identification when driving and refuelling

jacking and wheel changing techniques

manual handling techniques
