Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for intermediate scaffolding operations
   • Access, interpret and apply intermediate scaffolding operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Develop a preliminary scaffolding plan and site sketch
   • Check and confirm job feasibility and schedule with appropriate personnel
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Finalise and confirm the scaffolding plan, including the scheduling of required resources
2. Prepare intermediate scaffolding
   • Identify, select, inspect and certify as serviceable scaffolding equipment, materials and tools
   • Label and repair or dispose of unserviceable scaffolding equipment, materials and tools
   • Prepare scaffolding/equipment gear
   • Arrange and coordinate transportation of equipment and tools to the worksite in accordance with the scaffolding plan
   • Prepare the site for scaffolding
3. Erect intermediate scaffolding
   • Carry out erection of intermediate scaffolding
   • Perform work safely at heights, on incomplete structures and in confined spaces
   • Leave the site clean of all surplus components, equipment, tools and debris
   • Inspect the scaffolding/equipment
4. Maintain intermediate scaffolding
   • Inspect critical structural and safety areas of the scaffolding/equipment, and identify any variation from the plan
   • Perform alteration or repair with due regard for the critical safety and structural areas of the scaffolding/equipment
5. Dismantle intermediate scaffolding
   • Dismantle scaffolding in a safe and orderly manner
   • Inspect, classify, label and remove equipment from the site

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient conducting of intermediate scaffolding operations including:

identifying, selecting, certifying and using the required equipment materials and tools

planning and preparing for conducting intermediate scaffolding operations works effectively with others to undertake and conduct intermediate scaffolding operations that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communication techniques and equipment to convey information to others

maintaining all written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

demonstrates completion of conducting intermediate scaffolding operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

working safely at heights

working on incomplete structures

working in confined spaces

dismantling intermediate scaffolding, including:

inspection, classification and labelling of intermediate scaffolding

completing critical structural and safety inspections of scaffolding and equipment

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting intermediate scaffolding operations:

accessing and applying the National Standard for High Risk Work

identifying equipment characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

applying hand-eye coordination

accessing, interpreting and applying technical information
