Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for belly dump truck operations
   • Access, interpret and apply conducting belly dump truck operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Access, interpret and apply required geological and survey data
   • Inspect and prepare work area in coordination with others
   • Resolve coordination requirements with others at the site prior to commencing, during and on completions of work activities
2. Operate belly dump truck
   • Isolate vehicle and carry out pre-start checks including a walk around the vehicle and inspection of the body and tyres and report any issues identified
   • Enter and exit the vehicle using a three points of contact technique
   • Conduct start-up procedures, then start up the vehicle
   • Select and modify the operating/drive technique to appropriately meet changing work conditions
   • Drive, manoeuvre, conduct and control operations within the vehicle limitations
   • Act on or report monitoring systems and alarms
   • Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety to self, others, plant and equipment
   • Conduct park-up and shutdown procedures
3. Load, haul and dump materials
   • Position belly dump truck under loading unit and load vehicle
   • Carry out approved haulage operations
   • Control gate opening and vehicle speed to create even spread of material when dumping
   • Complete load, haul and dump work activity
4. Carry out belly dump truck post-operational procedures
   • Prepare vehicle for maintenance
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
   • Refuel vehicle
   • Return vehicle to service
   • Process written maintenance records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the conduct of belly dump trucks that meets all of the required outcomes including:

using a range of communications techniques and equipment to convey information to others

coordinates activities with others

working safely around other machines and personnel

demonstrates completion of conducting belly dump truck operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

driving and manoeuvring belly dump vehicle smoothly, adjusting operation techniques for the work environment and changing work conditions

operating belly dump vehicle within limitations

correctly positioning the belly dump vehicle for loading of materials under one (1) of the following loading equipment:

shovels

wheel loaders

excavators

bins

conveyor belts

draglines

hauling materials to designated location/s i.e. Tip Head, Crusher pocket, Waste Dump etc

correctly positions the vehicle for discharging materials

controlling the degree of gate opening and the speed of the vehicle during discharge

controlling the discharge rate to spread load evenly

identifying issues with vehicle equipment and makes minor adjustments

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting belly dump truck operations:

equipment safety requirements

equipment operating, maintenance and cleaning requirements and procedures

vehicle refuelling procedures

complying with operational system

start-up and shutdown procedures

hauling procedures

loading procedures

changing work conditions

systems and alarms
