Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Select routing for air freight transport
  2. Advise on and organise packaging, packing, stowage and storage of freight for air transport
  3. Assist in organising insurance for air freight transport
  4. Organise permits and authorisations needed for air freight transport
  5. Liaise with freight forwarding global network
  6. Track and trace international cargo being forwarded by air transport
  7. Complete required documentation and records

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

assisting in organising insurance for air freight transport

communicating effectively with others and confirming messages and responses are correctly and clearly understood (particularly in situations where communication is with a person for whom English is a second language)

completing documentation and records required for air freight transport accurately

completing freight forwarding estimates and calculations for air freight transport

interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work

liaising with the freight forwarding global network when organising air freight transport

monitoring work activities in terms of planned schedule and deadlines

organising permits and authorisations needed for air freight transport

reading and interpreting instructions, procedures, information and relevant signs

reporting and/or rectifying identified problems promptly in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures

responding appropriately to cultural differences in the workplace

selecting routing for air freight transport

tracking international cargo being forwarded by air transport

working collaboratively with others

working systematically with required attention to detail.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

airports, cargo handling and terminal equipment at major worldwide airports and freight terminals

aircraft containers and containerisation, including types, purposes, dimensions and specifications; loading principles and processes; load planning for containers

aircraft types used for international air freight transport, including their applications, capacity and routes

applicable regulations and legislation:

Australian and international regulations, conventions and codes of practice for international forwarding of freight by air transport

Australian and international standards and certification requirements

relevant Australian and international environmental protection legislation

relevant Australian and international transport security and safety legislation

relevant regulations for importing and exporting cargo

relevant regulations for international trading and financial transactions

Australian and international regulations and conventions applicable to planning and organising international freight forwarding by air transport (including importing, exporting and transiting goods)

cargo types, consignments and consolidations

definitions, purpose and use of Incoterms and Combiterms

global time zones and hours of operation

major air routes, services, conferences, airports and freight terminals as they apply to air freight transport

parameters of air freight transport including transport security requirements

pre-transport issues for air transport

principles of international trade and commerce

principles of quality assurance and customer service standards, policies and procedures as they apply in the international freight forwarding industry

processes for chartering aircraft – types of charter, terms and contracts

relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations

sources of information and documentation for international freight forwarding by air transport, including permits and authorisations

standard procedures, codes of practice and protocols for planning and organising international freight forwarding by air transport (including importing, exporting and transiting goods)

types of packaging for air transport

typical problems that can occur when planning and organising international freight forwarding by air transport and related appropriate action that can be taken to prevent or solve these problems.
