Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Visually inspect vehicle and towing equipment
  2. Check vehicle and towing equipment for operational capability
  3. Identify and assess impact of faults on towing operations
  4. Use towing equipment on vehicle
  5. Clean towing vehicle and its equipment
  6. Record and report results of visual inspection and operational checks

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

adapting to changes in towing vehicles, associated equipment and workplace procedures

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures

communicating effectively with others

completing relevant documentation

modifying activities depending on towing contexts, risk situations and environments

planning own work, predicting consequences and identifying improvements

reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures and labels

recognising problems concerning the safety and operational capability of a towing vehicle and its equipment and taking appropriate action

selecting and using relevant equipment, tools and cleaning agents

using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards including the operation of portable fire extinguishers

working safely and collaboratively with others.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

characteristics, capabilities and limitations of towing vehicle and its equipment

documentation and record requirements when using, cleaning and servicing a towing vehicle and its equipment

focus of operation of work systems, equipment, management and workplace operating systems for using, cleaning and servicing a towing vehicle and its equipment

hazards that may exist when using, cleaning and servicing a towing vehicle and its equipment, and the precautions and action that should be taken to minimise or eliminate hazards concerned

housekeeping standards and procedures

operational safety requirements for towing vehicle and equipment concerned

problems that may occur and appropriate action that can be taken to resolve these problems

relevant regulations and standards

relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines

safe working loads for towing vehicle

tools, materials and equipment for using , cleaning and maintenance of a towing vehicle and its equipment, and the precautions and procedures that should be followed in their use

workplace procedures and policies for using, cleaning and servicing of a towing vehicle and its equipment.
