Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Visually inspect vehicle and towing equipment
   • Towing vehicle and equipment are visually inspected prior to operations in accordance with standard pre-operational functional and safety check workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications
   • Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and control measures are implemented
   • Aspects of vehicle or equipment found to be faulty or outside manufacturer or workplace specifications are reported to designated persons for appropriate action
2. Check vehicle and towing equipment for operational capability
   • Towing vehicle and equipment are checked to ensure they can be operated in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
   • All safety systems are checked for operational effectiveness
   • Routine servicing and lubrication checks of towing vehicle and its equipment are carried out in accordance with the service schedule for a vehicle and the equipment concerned
3. Identify and assess impact of faults on towing operations
   • Effect of identified faults on the operation of a towing vehicle and equipment is assessed
   • Faulty equipment or components that may affect the safe operation of a vehicle and equipment are isolated, tagged and reported to appropriate personnel for rectification
4. Use towing equipment on vehicle
   • Towing equipment is operated in accordance with manufacturer specifications and regulatory requirements
   • Attachment points used in towing operation and weight of vehicle being towed or load being carried are checked to ensure they are consistent with established towing practice, regulatory requirements and permissible safe working loads for towing vehicle and its associated towing equipment
   • Safety precautions are followed when using towing equipment on a towing vehicle in accordance with workplace procedures and WHS/OHS requirements
   • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn in accordance with workplace procedures and WHS/OHS requirements
5. Clean towing vehicle and its equipment
   • Appropriate cleaning process is selected for type of towing vehicle and its equipment in accordance with workplace procedures
   • Cleaning materials are prepared in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and workplace procedure
   • Required PPE and safety equipment is selected and used in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
   • Towing vehicle is cleaned using appropriate cleaning materials and tools in accordance with workplace procedures
6. Record and report results of visual inspection and operational checks
   • Results of visual inspection and operational checks are accurately reported in accordance with regulatory requirements, workplace policy and workplace procedures
   • Clear, unambiguous and concise records are kept in accordance with workplace policy
   • Clear reference is made to any items that may affect the future safety of a towing vehicle or equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

adapting to changes in towing vehicles, associated equipment and workplace procedures applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures communicating effectively with others completing relevant documentation modifying activities depending on towing contexts, risk situations and environments planning own work, predicting consequences and identifying improvements reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures and labels recognising problems concerning the safety and operational capability of a towing vehicle and its equipment and taking appropriate action selecting and using relevant equipment, tools and cleaning agents using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards including the operation of portable fire extinguishers working safely and collaboratively with others.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

characteristics, capabilities and limitations of towing vehicle and its equipment documentation and record requirements when using, cleaning and servicing a towing vehicle and its equipment focus of operation of work systems, equipment, management and workplace operating systems for using, cleaning and servicing a towing vehicle and its equipment hazards that may exist when using, cleaning and servicing a towing vehicle and its equipment, and the precautions and action that should be taken to minimise or eliminate hazards concerned housekeeping standards and procedures operational safety requirements for towing vehicle and equipment concerned problems that may occur and appropriate action that can be taken to resolve these problems relevant regulations and standards relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines safe working loads for towing vehicle tools, materials and equipment for using , cleaning and maintenance of a towing vehicle and its equipment, and the precautions and procedures that should be followed in their use workplace procedures and policies for using, cleaning and servicing of a towing vehicle and its equipment.
