Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Inspect site
   • Site access and exit routes are identified
   • Site hazards are identified and required action is taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
   • Loading and unloading area is selected based on assessment of worksite requirements, physical conditions, proximity to job and safety of operations
2. Unload/load crane from/onto float
   • Vehicle is inspected and checked prior to unloading
   • Pre-operational checks are conducted in accordance with manufacturer instructions and workplace procedures
   • Float is positioned on site in designated loading/unloading area noting ground conditions, and potential and identified site hazards
   • Lashings, chains, stabilisers and chocks are safely removed, and correctly stowed and secured in designated areas
   • Loading ramps are secured
   • Crane is driven on/off float ensuring no injury to personnel or damage to equipment and site
   • Crane is stabilised, shut down and secured
3. Secure crane for travel
   • Weight and dimensions of crane are established and compared to carrying capacity of vehicle
   • Crane is correctly positioned on float
   • Crane is secured using appropriate securing equipment and is shackled to anchorage points in accordance with workplace/float securing system and manufacturer specifications
   • Securing equipment is tightened to ensure security during travel
   • Ramps are loaded and secured
   • Documentation is completed in accordance with workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures communicating effectively with others interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments monitoring work activities in terms of planned schedule operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with workplace procedures reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs reporting and/or rectifying identified problems promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures selecting and using required personal protective equipment (PPE) conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards working collaboratively with others working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

application of relevant agreements, codes of practice and other legislative requirements guidelines relating to the safe use of machinery and equipment hazard management consistent with the principle of hierarchy of control with elimination, substitution, isolation and engineering control measures being selected before safe working practices and PPE high risk work licence requirements identification and correct use of equipment, processes and procedures related to loading and unloading wheeled or tracked cranes load restraint guide requirements mobile crane applications, capacities, configurations, safety hazards and control mechanisms operational procedures for crane crews operational work systems and equipment procedures for prioritising and multi-tasking work relevant road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements for mobile crane operation wheeled or tracked mobile crane applications, capacities, configurations, safety hazards and control mechanisms workplace procedures for loading and unloading wheeled or tracked cranes workplace procedures for planning mobile crane jobs and setting up work areas.
