Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for tip truck operations
   • Vehicle haulage documentation is accessed, interpreted and applied to ensure work activity is compliant
   • Work requirements are obtained, confirmed and applied.
   • Signage requirements are identified, obtained and implemented in accordance with project traffic management plan
   • Appropriate vehicle, tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are selected
   • Tools, equipment and PPE are checked for serviceability and faults are rectified or reported
   • Environmental protection requirements are identified, confirmed and applied in accordance with project environmental management plan
2. Conduct tip truck pre-operational checks
   • Pre-start, start-up, park and shutdown checks are carried out
   • Tip truck controls and functions, including tray, body, steering, brakes and manoeuvrability are checked for serviceability and faults are rectified or reported
3. Drive tip truck
   • Site operating hazards and risks are identified and managed, and safe operating techniques are applied
   • Engine power is managed to ensure efficiency of truck movements, and to minimise strain on engine, drive line and gears
   • Engine power is coordinated with gear selection to ensure smooth transition and operation within torque range
   • Tip truck is operated in accordance with work instructions and manufacturer instructions
   • Road/traffic conditions, traffic flow, distance, load and appropriate speed are monitored and considered to ensure safety of people, property, equipment, loads and facilities
   • Vehicle is stopped smoothly, using engine retarder, gears and brakes
4. Load, transport and tip materials
   • Tip truck is positioned at load and discharge points with a minimum of manoeuvre
   • Tip truck movements are carried out in a smooth and controlled manner including raising and lowering tray body
   • Weight and distribution of load is assessed, and type of material and size of vehicle are considered to ensure it is within vehicle capacity
   • Safety and security of load is maintained from loading site to discharge site, including load cover requirements
   • Load is safely discharged in accordance with fill site conditions and work instructions
   • Tip truck body is lowered, excess material is cleared and tray body is secured before leaving site
5. Shut down and clean up
   • Visual and physical inspections are conducted and faults are recorded
   • Vehicle records are maintained/updated and submitted
   • Work area is cleared and materials are disposed of, or recycled in accordance with workplace requirements
   • Vehicle, tools and equipment are cleaned, checked, maintained and stored

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions and include:

completing tip truck operations safely, effectively and efficiently, and meeting all required outcomes on a minimum of three (3) separate occasions including: applying load cover carrying out inspections and identifying faults carrying out log-on, pre-start, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures obtaining and applying signage requirements operating, steering, manoeuvring and positioning tip truck organising work activities to comply with site standards processing written records and reports raising and lowering tray smoothly safely discharging load according to site conditions and work instructions stopping and parking tip truck locating and applying relevant documentation, policies and procedures on at least one (1) occasion working effectively with others to undertake and complete tip truck operations to meet all required outcomes on at least one (1) occasion including: communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions and include knowledge of:

load quantity calculations operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures permit conditions including where and when they apply recording and reporting procedures reporting faults in vehicles and ancillary equipment safety data sheet (SDS)/material safety data sheet (MSDS) and materials handling methods safety requirements site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities start up and shutdown procedures tip truck types, characteristics, technical capabilities, limitations and suitability vehicle specifications and limitations including: mass dimensions volumes axle weights.
