Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for pilot or escort operation
   • Job hazards are identified and required action is taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
   • Maintenance needs of pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are identified in accordance with maintenance schedule or fault reports
   • Pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are prepared for operation in accordance with manufacturer specifications, workplace procedures and government regulations
   • Minor vehicle maintenance is carried out in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications
   • Post-maintenance inspections and tests of pilot and/or escort vehicles and associated equipment are completed
   • Inspections outcomes, identified faults and repairs are recorded in accordance with workplace procedures
2. Carry out communications regarding pilot or escort operation
   • Transport companies whose vehicles are scheduled for escort are consulted to confirm requirements for escort operation
   • Escort permit is verified for completeness and accuracy, and convoy is checked to ensure accordance with permit, government rules, regulations and policy
   • Permit holder is advised of the results of the permit check
   • Convoy is briefed and given instructions and directions about escort operation in accordance with workplace procedures
3. Conduct pilot and/or escort operation
   • Required vehicle positioning, traffic warning and directional signalling procedures are implemented to enable safe passage of load
   • Safety equipment is operated and roadside obstacles are positioned to ensure safe passage of load in accordance with government rules and regulations, and workplace procedures
   • Precautions are taken to ensure convoy personnel are aware of road and other conditions that may impact on load and vehicle security
   • All required liaison with relevant authorities is undertaken
   • Documentation is completed and proofread in accordance with government rules and regulations, and workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures communicating effectively with others completing relevant documentation modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs reporting and/or rectifying identified problems promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures working collaboratively with others working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

documentation requirements for piloting and escorting oversized/overmassed loads driving hazards and related defensive driving techniques efficient driving techniques factors that may cause traffic delays and diversions and related action that can be taken low-risk driving behaviours map reading and road navigation techniques National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) rules, regulations and guidelines pre-operational checks carried out on vehicle and related action principles of stress management when carrying out pilot/escort functions procedures to be followed in a driving/piloting/escorting emergency relevant Australian Road Rules and state/territory roads and traffic authority road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements for piloting and escorting oversized and overmassed loads relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations.
