Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Prepare for packing
   • Convenient, suitable and unrestricted work area for packing process is selected and prepared in consultation with client
   • Items for removal are identified and order of packing is determined in accordance with removal documentation
   • Cartons, protective and other materials are selected and located in an accessible area
   • Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and control measures are implemented
   • Items ineligible for removal are identified in accordance with industry standards and company policy, and appropriate action is taken in consultation with client
2. Pack and unpack cartons
   • Items for removal are wrapped and packed in accordance with industry standards and workplace procedures
   • Fragile or valuable items are specially wrapped and positioned in accordance with workplace procedures and industry standards
   • Cartons are sealed and labelled in accordance with removal documentation and workplace procedures
   • Cartons are unpacked and goods are unwrapped and stored in accordance with removal documentation and workplace procedures
   • Hazardous items are identified and actioned in accordance with removal documentation and workplace procedures
3. Complete packing/unpacking process
   • Used cartons are folded and removed, and rubbish is disposed of in accordance with workplace procedures
   • Required removal documentation is completed in accordance with workplace requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures communicating and working effectively with others implementing contingency plans modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule operating and adapting to differences in furniture and effects, in accordance with workplace procedures reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures and signs working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

housekeeping standards and procedures insurance rights and responsibilities methods of securing a load on a removal vehicle packing materials and tools packing techniques for various types of furniture and effects risks when packing and unpacking cartons during a removal and related precautions to control the risk workplace procedures and policies for packing and unpacking cartons.
