Elements and Performance Criteria
- Inspect site
- Site is inspected as required with other relevant personnel, to assess job requirements
- All necessary parameters are measured to ensure accuracy of calculations
- Hazards are identified through inspection of site and load, and required action is taken to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
- Additional information about load and possible hazards is sought from customer and expert personnel, as required
- Special site requirements are identified
- Plan lift
- Operation plan is developed in consultation with other relevant personnel, including hazard prevention/control measures in accordance with workplace procedures, applicable Australian Standards and codes of practice
- Approval to carry out lift is obtained from appropriate statutory authority, as required
- Multiple crane lifts are planned, as required, to encompass determination of types of cranes suitable for use and an assessment of load share to be carried by each crane
- Crane load chart is interpreted and information on permissible loads, radii, weights, boom and jib are taken into account in planning job
- Safe working load (SWL) or working load limit (WLL) is calculated
- Appropriate drawings and simulations are created to check feasibility of planned operations
- Information from previous lifts is used in developing operational plan
- Range of alternatives is considered to ensure effective and safe lift
- Unsolicited, irrelevant information is disregarded to focus on task at hand
- Need for additional/specialised equipment is ascertained and arrangements are made for collection/delivery to site
- Communications system is determined and all team members are briefed on its use when conducting lift
- Set up lift
- Site measurements and SWL/WLL are checked to verify accuracy
- Operating and emergency controls are checked to ensure crane is in safe working order
- Appropriate personal protective equipment is selected and worn in accordance with manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- Site is isolated as required and assistance is sought to ensure public safety as required
- Other personnel on site are directed, as required to ensure risks to personnel and equipment are minimised
- Variables that affect operation predictability are eliminated wherever possible
- Work effectively in a team
- Consultation with all team members is sought in developing operational plan
- Ideas are discussed and evaluated with team members to determine viability and to reach consensus on an effective plan
- Individual roles and responsibilities are clarified and agreed
- Other team members are assisted as required, to ensure operation can be completed safety and efficiently
- Lift and move load
- Nominated authorised person is recognised as being in control and instructions are followed
- Test runs are conducted as required to ensure a safe lift
- Load is hoisted and lowered into position using crane movements in accordance with the appropriate Australian Standard
- Danger is anticipated by monitoring crane and load, and instruction to stop operation is given, when there are concerns lift is not proceeding as planned
- Potential impact of change in one area of operation on lift as a whole, is recognised
- In unanticipated situations, contribution is made to developing alternative operational plan
- Follow up on job
- Specialised equipment is checked and re-stored in accordance with workplace procedures
- Operation is reviewed in consultation with relevant personnel and contribution is made to recommendations for review of procedures as required
- Need for further afterjob debriefing or counselling is recognised and appropriate action is taken
- Records are completed promptly in accordance with workplace procedures
