Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Identify risks and plan operation
  2. Cleaning operation requirements are assessed
  3. Potential risks or hazards to self, the environment or others are identified
  4. Relevant information including workplace procedures and health & safety codes are identified, read and clarified as required
  5. Cleaning and personal protective equipment and consumables are identified
  6. Requirements are assembled in accordance with national regulations, standards, safety codes and workplace procedures
  7. Work is planned identifying critical parameters of the work
  8. Clean required enclosed space
  9. Unauthorised persons are removed from the work area
  10. Engineering and personal safety equipment is used
  11. Unwanted labels are removed
  12. Cleaning products are mixed in accordance with manufacturer’s and workplace instructions as required
  13. Containers are swept out and washed so that mud, grime and residue from products stored in the containers are removed
  14. Security of chemicals and equipment is maintained
  15. Run-off is contained and waste is disposed of in accordance with local laws and workplace procedures
  16. Relevant documentation is completed
  17. Equipment used for the process is checked and stored

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate hazards that may exist when conducting cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

communicating and working effectively with others when conducting cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

completing documentation related to conducting cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

following routine servicing procedures for cleaning tools and equipment

identifying and correctly using equipment, emergency equipment and cleaning materials

implementing contingency plans when conducting cleaning procedures in enclosed spaces

modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments

monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule

operating and adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures

reading, interpreting and applying relevant legislation, processes and workplace procedures for carrying out cleaning operations in enclosed spaced

selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards

working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and include knowledge of:

risks when carrying out cleaning operations in enclosed spaces and related precautions to control these risks

site layout and obstacles

workplace procedures and policies for carrying out cleaning operations in enclosed spaces.
