Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Apply control procedures
   • Legislative responsibilities and requirements are identified, interpreted and applied
   • Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements are identified, interpreted and applied
   • Company procedures and requirements are identified, interpreted and applied
   • Appropriate personal protective equipment is selected and used in accordance with workplace operating procedures
   • Traffic control equipment is selected in accordance with task requirements and workplace operating procedures
2. Coordinate traffic
   • Vehicles and pedestrians are monitored to ensure safety of persons and property
   • Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and control measures are implemented
   • Adjustments are made for changing conditions and to ensure best traffic flow
   • Handheld signs (bats) are positioned in accordance with operating procedures and maximum visibility is provided
   • Mishaps or accidents are managed in accordance with workplace operating procedures and relevant legislation
3. Maintain effective communication
   • Effective communication is maintained between all parties
   • Appropriate language and protocols are used during communication
   • Messages are transmitted concisely in accordance with operating procedures
   • Electronic communications power supply is maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendation
   • After a period of non-contact, radio or other electronic contact is checked to ensure effective operation in accordance with operating procedures
4. Maintain equipment
   • Equipment is cleaned, maintained and stored or stowed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures, to ensure operational effectiveness
   • Documentation is completed in accordance with operating procedures and workplace journey requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures communicating effectively with others controlling traffic by: ensuring safe and efficient movement of all vehicular and pedestrian traffic assisting movement of oversized or overmassed (OSOM) vehicle being escorted implementing contingency plans modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments monitoring work activities in terms of planned schedule reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions and operating procedures rectifying and/or reporting identified problems promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures selecting and correctly using signage using handheld signs using personal protective equipment and clothing in accordance with work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements working collaboratively with others working safely in accordance with instructions working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods, vehicles or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

electronic communications operating procedures emergency management plan operating procedures for controlling traffic during piloting duties purpose of required personal protective equipment and instructions for its use relevant journey documentation relevant national heavy vehicle legislation and regulatory requirements requirements of traffic control during mishaps or accidents verbal and non-verbal communication techniques workplace and equipment safety requirements, and relevant WHS/OHS legislation.
