Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Check rolling stock and train equipment
  2. Rolling stock is checked to ensure it is fit for operation in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
  3. Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and risk control measures are implemented
  4. Train equipment is checked for effective operation in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
  5. Rolling stock or equipment faults, defects or problem areas are identified and remedial action is organised in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures
  6. Check for planned variations from normal routines
  7. Documentation related to operational variations and special instructions are identified and accessed
  8. Planned variations and special instructions for train are noted and actioned in accordance with workplace procedures
  9. Check passenger facilities
  10. Passenger facilities are checked to ensure they are clean and operating as required
  11. Passenger convenience items are checked as required to ensure they meet the recommended levels
  12. Variations from established standards are reported or rectified, in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications
  13. Major faults are reported to appropriate person in accordance with workplace procedures
  14. Check stock levels
  15. Stock levels are checked to ensure required amounts are present
  16. Adjustments to stock levels are made as required, in accordance with workplace procedures
  17. Complete documentation
  18. Documentation is completed as required after rolling stock and train equipment are checked, in accordance with workplace procedures
  19. Documentation related to checking passenger facilities and stock levels is completed as required, in accordance with workplace procedures
  20. Variations from established standards are reported or rectified in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications
  21. Adjustments to stock levels are made, as required, in accordance with workplace procedures
  22. Documentation related to checking passenger facilities and stock levels is completed as required in accordance with workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures

assessing stock levels and completing documentation

checking equipment and related documentation

checking for planned variations from normal routines

checking passenger facilities

checking rolling stock

communicating effectively with others

identifying job hazards and taking required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards

identifying, selecting and using relevant equipment and materials

interpreting and following operational instructions and prioritising work

modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments

monitoring work activities in terms of planned schedule

reading and interpreting relevant instructions, procedures and information

reporting and/or rectifying problems, faults or malfunctions promptly in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures

working collaboratively with others

working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

applicable state/territory legislated rail safety requirements, relevant codes of practice and/or guidelines

essential equipment, supplies and materials required for trip

how to identify possible fault or defects that may occur with rolling stock and equipment

normal level of use of consumable items such as food and beverages on passenger trains

passenger train customer service and cleanliness standards

position and number of fire extinguishers on passenger trains

problems that may occur when preparing a train for departure, and actions that should be taken to resolve these problems

relevant documentation requirements

relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations, including codes of practice and/or guidelines

rolling stock and car sequence, and relevant labelling requirements

rolling stock and equipment checks

structure of the train consist

types of rolling stock and/or passenger cars and their features

workplace procedures for preparing a train for departure, including for passenger train operation

workplace procedures for reporting identified rolling stock and equipment defects.
