Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Identify workplace procedures, resources and requirements for cleaning pallets
   • Workplace operating procedures, including work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements for pallet cleaning, are identified and read
   • Hazards are identified, risks are assessed and control measures are implemented
   • Equipment, including appropriate engineering controls and personal protective equipment, and consumables are selected in accordance with work area requirements
   • Specific requirements for pallet inspection and cleaning are identified and used in planning of work activities
   • Requirements for organisation of pallet storage before and after cleaning are identified to meet workplace requirements
2. Inspect and clean pallets
   • Information on serviceability requirements of pallets for required purposes is accessed and read
   • Pallet design features are noted and pallet types are identified for particular purposes
   • Pallets are inspected prior to, and during, cleaning to ensure that condition is appropriate for required use
   • Damaged pallets are tagged for repair or recycling
   • Pallets are cleaned following workplace procedures
   • Pallets are sorted and stacked in appropriate storage areas
   • Work is carried out in accordance with workplace practices and safe work procedures
3. Monitor and maintain cleanliness and tidiness of pallet cleaning and storage areas
   • Initiative is used to continuously monitor cleanliness, safety and tidiness of pallet cleaning and storage area
   • Housekeeping issues are raised with designated personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
   • Cleaning equipment and supplies are maintained and stored
4. Complete assigned pallet cleaning and inspection duties
   • Assigned pallet cleaning and inspection duties are conducted in accordance with workplace requirements
   • Documentation concerning cleaning operations is completed in accordance with workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least one occasion and include:

adapting to differences in equipment in accordance with operating procedures applying precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards applying relevant legislation and workplace procedures carrying out inspection of pallets to workplace standards communicating effectively with others identifying, selecting and using relevant equipment maintaining cleaning tools and equipment modifying activities depending on operational contingencies, risk situations and environments monitoring and prioritising work activities in terms of planned schedule reading, interpreting and following relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs reporting and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures selecting and using required personal protective equipment conforming to industry and work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) standards working systematically with required attention to detail without injury to self or others, or damage to goods or equipment.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

documentation and record requirements equipment used for cleaning and inspecting pallets and the precautions and procedures that should be followed in its use housekeeping standards and procedures operational work systems, equipment, management and site operating systems for cleaning and inspecting pallets problems that may occur and appropriate action that can be taken to resolve these problems regulations relevant for cleaning and inspecting pallets relevant WHS/OHS and environmental protection procedures and guidelines site layout and obstacles workplace procedures and policies for cleaning and inspecting pallets including test methods for pallet strength and integrity.
