Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to handle, educate, and ride horses to muster, move, separate, and check livestock, and care for horses and equipment.There are potential risks associated with working with and around horses and livestock.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, work health and safety, animal welfare, biosecurity requirements and sustainability practices.All units of competency dealing with animals in the AHC Training Package have the requirements for animals to be handled humanely to minimise stress and discomfort.This unit applies to experienced workers in the livestock industry who use horses to muster and check stock on a grazing enterprise. It is normally carried out independently according to enterprise procedures.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace, OR workplace and a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessments must be conducted using educated and green uneducated live horses and livestock in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical tasks experienced in the job role.

Assessors must satisfy current standards for RTOs.

Element: Prepare horses for work

  • Catch and handle horses safely and humanely
  • Check horse’s health, soundness, and fitness level to ensure they are capable to complete the work required
  • Select, check, and maintain working equipment, if required

  • Muster or catch horses in need of attention, and report and record condition in line with enterprise procedures
  • Administer prescribed treatments for common ailments, under supervision of the veterinarian or manager
  • Safely check horse’s legs and feet, safely clean out feet, and correctly identify lameness and potential causes for lameness
  • Organise shoeing where required
