Description This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to safely use firearms on an aerodrome to control wildlife hazards. Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to aerodromes that operate across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.The work must be carried out in accordance with applicable operational standards as required by CASA when using firearms to control wildlife hazards on an aerodrome, including the need to comply with relevant firearms licensing requirements.Use for ADF Aviation is to be in accordance with relevant Defence Orders and Instructions and applicable CASA compliance.Work is performed under limited supervision.This unit is nominally packaged at Certificate II.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Apply safety precautions in the use of firearms
  • The locations on an aerodrome where firearms may be discharged are identified
  • Hazards associated with the use of firearms on the aerodrome are identified and managed
  • The firearm is carried, loaded and discharged in the correct manner
  • The firearm is cleaned effectively and safely
  • The firearm is stored in accordance with regulatory requirements
       
Element: Use appropriate firearms and ammunition to control wildlife hazards
  • Appropriate wildlife hazard control measures are selected in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Cracker shells are used correctly to disperse a flock of birds in accordance with operating procedures
  • Live shot is used in a safe manner in the control of wildlife hazards

In both real and simulated environments, access is required to:

relevant and appropriate materials and equipment, and

applicable documentation including workplace procedures, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals

Method of assessment

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken by a registered training organisation

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral tests

Practical assessment must occur:

through activities in an appropriately simulated environment at the registered training organisation, and/or

in an appropriate range of situations in the workplace
