Description This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to control a remote pilot aircraft (RPA) on the ground including starting and stopping an aircraft engine, fulfilling all required safety requirements, and if required, performing pre-taxi functions and manoeuvring the aircraft on the ground without incident. Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application Work must be carried out in compliance with the relevant licence and aircraft rating requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and/or ADF; airspace control requirements and Day Visual Flight Rules (Day VFR); and aircraft control principles, regulations, safety codes, protocols and procedures relating to controlling an aircraft on the ground.Operations are conducted as part of commercial or military aircraft activities across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Use for ADF Aviation is to be in accordance with relevant Defence Orders and Instructions and applicable CASA compliance.Work is performed under limited supervision.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Start and stop engine
  • Pre-start and after-start checks are completed in accordance with Flight Manual/POH
  • Engine is started and shut down in accordance with Flight Manual/POH
  • Emergencies are managed in accordance with Flight Manual/POH and regulatory requirements
  • Pre-and after shutdown checks are completed in accordance with Flight Manual/POH
  • Manufacturers limitations and report deviations are complied with as appropriate
  • Aircraft is positioned to ensure safety when starting engine
       
Element: Taxi aircraft
  • ATIS reports and taxi clearance are obtained where applicable
  • Aircraft is taxied at a safe speed and in accordance with prevailing location, traffic, surface and weather conditions
  • Instrument checks are performed clear of conflicting traffic and other hazards to confirm serviceability
  • Handling and braking on the ground is in accordance with Flight Manual/POH
  • Airfield markings/lights/signals/indicators, where appropriate, are interpreted and complied with
  • Lookout and right-of-way rules are complied with when applicable
  • Adverse effects on other aircrafts, facilities and personnel is avoided
  • Inspection of taxi path is carried out when surface conditions are obscured

Method of assessment

Assessment of this unit must be undertaken by a registered training organisation

As a minimum, assessment of knowledge must be conducted through appropriate written/oral tests

Practical assessment must occur:

through activities in an appropriately simulated environment at the registered training organisation, and/or

in an appropriate range of situations in the workplace
