Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to maintain a storage area and to control the movement of stock used in providing waste management services. It requires the ability to organise activities to maintain equipment and consumables, and to use safe work practices to respond to stock control emergencies.The unit supports those who work under supervision in a waste management team.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency at the time of endorsement.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessor requirements

As a minimum, assessors must satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) current at the time of assessment.

  • Storage area is kept clear and free from obstacles, and rubbish is removed and disposed of according to organisational and compliance requirements.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also maintain waste equipment and consumables storage areas, including:

cleaning and maintaining at least five pieces of equipment from the following:

compactors

conveyors

generators

hoses

lifting and loadshifting equipment

personal protective equipment

pumps

sampling equipment

scales

skips

sorting tables

storage and waste containers

tools

trailers

trolleys

vacuums

weighbridge

controlling and maintaining stock levels for at least five of the following consumables:

bailing and packaging materials

cleaning agents

cleaning rags

fuel

grease and oil

labels and stickers

stabilising and treatment chemicals

water.

While maintaining the above equipment and consumables, the person must:

follow organisational procedures to:

maintain a clean, tidy and secure equipment and consumables storage area

maintain records and documents relating to stock, equipment and emergencies

work safely using personal protective equipment (PPE)

comply with regulatory and legal requirements and manufacturer specifications when:

disposing of waste

handling chemicals

labelling and coding containers

responding to stock control emergencies

storing fuel and chemicals

maintain stock currency by issuing on a first-in and first-out basis and disposing of obsolete stock

identify and respond to emergencies in the storage area

record storage area details.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of dangerous goods

measures to respond to stock control emergencies including spillages and accidents

procedures for labelling and coding waste consumables relating to:

chemical manifests

chemical registers

colour codes

communication books

manufacturer instructions

safety data sheets

techniques for cleaning and maintaining equipment, as specified in the performance evidence

techniques for controlling and maintaining inventories and stocks of waste consumables

waste types including non-conforming waste.
