A person demonstrating competency in this unit must satisfy the requirements of the elements, performance criteria, foundation skills and range of conditions of this unit.

The person must also store waste in a storage facility for two different tasks.

While storing waste, the person must:

identify an appropriate waste storage facility based on an assessment of:

the amount and volume of waste

the types of waste to be stored

waste compatibilities

follow organisational procedures to work safely and comply with regulatory and legal requirements

select, obtain and operate equipment required to facilitate waste storage

identify waste types and waste characteristics

place correct identification signage on the waste storage facility

check the integrity of stored waste and identify, manage or report non-conformances, as specified in the range of conditions

contain, secure and cover stored waste

document the details of stored waste using organisational proformas.

A person demonstrating competency in this unit must demonstrate knowledge of:

classifications of waste

compatibilities of waste types

key features of the waste management hierarchy

hazards and risks associated with stored waste including hazardous substances and dangerous goods

industry-accepted signalling techniques

Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below.

Waste storage requirements must include at least four of the following:

amount and type of waste to be stored

environmental conditions that impact on storage requirements

equipment requirements including PPE

length and method of storage

required storage facility

security requirements

signage requirements

waste compatibilities.

Relevant personnelmust include at least one of the following:

client

colleague

supervisor or team leader.

Compliance requirements must include:

commonwealth, state and territory legislation relating to storing waste, including:

environmental protection

industry codes

work health and safety.

Monitored must include checking for at least four of the following:

contamination

decomposing

drum expansion

gases

leaching or leaks

spillage

unstable form.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
