Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills required to plan and monitor the services of a work unit, manage unit resources, supervise and support staff and demonstrate effective decision making.This unit applies to those with both general and specialist competencies from a range of occupational areas within correctional services. Factors that will influence the application of this unit will include:type of institution and degrees of custody and securitysize, number of staff and range of serviceslocation, layout and construction or designavailable and required accommodationphilosophy, objectives and purpose of the organisationIn practice, managing a work unit will overlap with other generalist or specialist work activities such as work unit planning, managing activities to meet client requirements, coordinating resource allocation and usage, coordinating a work team, etc.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to allocation of resources.Those undertaking this unit work autonomously, occasionally accessing and evaluating support from a broad range of sources. The role requires critical reflection, organisation and high level communication skills.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Valid assessment of this unit requires a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered when managing a work unit, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and breakdowns in routine.

Assessment should include the opportunity to demonstrate evidence from work in the wider community. Evidence should be gathered over time in a range of contexts to ensure the candidate can achieve the unit outcome and apply the competency in different situations or environments.

Assessors must satisfy the NVR/AQTF mandatory competency requirements for assessors.
