Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills required to assess the need to use and apply defensive techniques, contain incidents and evaluate responses.This unit applies to those working in a custodial correctional services context.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to incident response.Those undertaking this unit work with support from a coordinated team with regular support.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Valid assessment of this unit requires a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered when controlling incidents using defensive equipment and tactics, including coping with difficulties, irregularities and breakdowns in routine.

  • Assess the level and nature of risk based on incident risk factors and identified opportunities.
  • Assess incidents to determine the need for defensive techniques against the organisation’s use of force guidelines, legal requirements and emergency response procedures.
  • Assess the capacity to complete the defensive action and consider viability of using alternative actions.
