Description This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to navigate transport in urban and rural environments.The unit replaces and is equivalent to CSCTRA003A Navigate transport which was adapted from the Public Safety Training Package unit PUAOPE005A .
Employability Skills The required outcomes described in this unit of competency contain applicable facets of employability skills. The Employability Skills Summary of the qualification in which this unit of competency is packaged, will assist in identifying employability skills requirements.
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit applies to staff whose duties involve the navigating of transport. These staff members may be from a range of occupational areas within correctional services and may include casual and contracted staff.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Design efficient transport routes.
  • Check and confirm the destination and itinerary from the assignment information.
  • Prepare and check maps and navigation equipment and information for relevance to assignment.
  • Plot positions and destination according to the assignment requirements, information from maps and site locations.
  • Check map information and environmental conditions and confirm to determine a safe and timed route.
  • Check transport and receiving agencies to ensure that access and thoroughfare are available.
  • Confirm permission for access to restricted sites.
       
Element: Navigate to destination.
  • Use records of route information and navigation aids to reach the destination.
  • Check and confirm locations according to procedures, safety margins and hazards.
  • Change routes when conditions and procedures require.
  • Report unexpected changes to plans.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Valid assessment of this unit requires:

a workplace environment or one that closely resembles normal work practice and replicates the range of conditions likely to be encountered by an individual responsible for navigating transport as part of a coordinated team including coping with difficulties, irregularities and changes to routine

copies of legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines relating to navigating transport

access to appropriate learning and assessment support when required.

Method of assessment

The following assessment methods are suggested:

observation of performance in routine workplace activities within a range of agreed responsibilities and in various work locations

written and/or oral questioning to assess knowledge and understanding

completion of workplace documents and reports produced as part of routine work activities

third-party reports from experienced practitioners

completion of performance feedback from supervisors and colleagues.

Guidance information for assessment

Assessment methods should reflect workplace demands, and any identified special needs of the candidate, including language and literacy implications and cultural factors that may affect responses to the questions.

In all cases where practical assessment is used it will be combined with targeted questioning to assess the underpinning knowledge.

Assessment Tasks
