Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to diagnose faults and repair broadcasting facilities and equipment in a variety of different environments.It applies to individuals who work with minimum supervision to repair faults, undertake routine maintenance and provide general technical support, working on single pieces of equipment and whole studios and systems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

broadcasting equipment and facilities

drawings, specifications, supplier manuals and other information relevant to broadcast equipment and systems

industry and regulatory standards.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Locate and repair faults
  • Use diagnostic techniques and reference material to isolate faults to equipment or parts of equipment
  • Use appropriate test and diagnose equipment methodically and safely, obtaining specialist advice where required
  • Consult with relevant personnel to determine the impact of repairs or maintenance on broadcast operations
  • Document maintenance requirements following industry and enterprise procedures
  • Provide temporary service, if necessary, to meet standards of existing equipment
  • Carry out equipment repairs within scope of own job role or organise repair by specialist services following enterprise procedures
  • Test performance of system or equipment for satisfactory operation on completion of repairs

  • Carry out routine alignment on broadcast systems, including scheduled replacement of mechanical parts
  • Advise relevant personnel if maintenance cannot be completed or faults outside the planned maintenance schedule have been found
  • Check interconnection between equipment is compatible and logical
  • Implement preventative maintenance routines and carry out repairs and alterations as required
  • Check, update and maintain system logbooks and fault reports following enterprise procedures
  • Monitor system or equipment faults for trends of intermittent failures in device or component
  • Consult with relevant personnel to ensure maintenance and maintenance procedures are met

provide clear information to personnel about correct usage and maintenance of facilities or equipment.

outline typical faults that arise in maintaining broadcasting equipment and facilities and how to handle these

describe procedures for disposing of obsolete equipment

identify work health and safety (WHS) requirements as they relate to broadcast system maintenance.
