Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist with altering, repairing and maintaining costumes for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.At this level, individuals are required to use some discretion and judgement and operate under broad supervision within an established framework of plans and procedures.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to costumes in need of modification, repair or maintenance.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Evidence of the ability to:

provide examples of finished costumes that have had a size adjustment and a simple style modification

use techniques to repair and restore costumes to optimum condition

use different repair and maintenance techniques for different types of fabrics and costumes

follow safety procedures when using sewing machines and other equipment.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe cleaning agents and the effect they have on a range of fabrics and materials

describe costume repair techniques and how to apply them

describe different roles and responsibilities of people working in a wardrobe department

describe the use, properties and care of different fabrics and materials regularly used in making costumes and how they react to laundering, dry cleaning or spot cleaning

provide examples of typical labelling and storage systems for costumes.
