Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to build a solid foundation in street dance techniques under the supervision of experienced dancers or dance teachers.People with little or no practical experience in street dance apply the skills and knowledge outlined in this unit. They could be applying the movements they learn to impromptu solo or group performances in public spaces, which could be outdoor or indoor.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to appropriate dance performance areas or spaces.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Review street dance as an art form
  • Discuss aspects of street dance culture and history with relevant personnel
  • Discuss the implications of the improvised nature of street dancing for learning and performance
  • Use dance terminology correctly in discussions
       
Element: Practise simple movements
  • Under the guidance of a teacher or mentor, perform warm-up exercises
  • Practise basic steps associated with selected style of street dancing
  • Incorporate musicality, timing and rhythm into exercises
  • Work within own physical limits
  • Respond to constructive feedback and advice from others
  • Perform warm-down exercises after dance activity

  • In consultation with others, agree on sequences that include a range of movements suitable to own technical ability
  • Match personal presentation to selected style of dance
  • Communicate the mood or style of dance sequence to spectators
  • Demonstrate a sense of timing and rhythm in performances

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

warm-up and warm-down activities

correct clothing and footwear

healthy nutrition and diet

describe:

how street dance evolved

current music and dance trends in street dance.
