Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to consolidate basic cultural dance technique to achieve a greater depth of expression in performances.This unit applies to dancers who are pursuing a career in theatre and other contexts where cultural dancing skills are required. Cultural dancing includes styles such as belly dancing, Irish dancing, Highland dancing, Spanish and Indian, as well as character dance sequences in ballets. They could be preparing for performances in commercial or community settings where they would usually be performing as members of an ensemble.At this level work is normally supervised, though some autonomy and judgement can be expected within established parameters.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to appropriate footwear, clothing, music and dance performance areas or spaces.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Maintain a physical conditioning program
  • In consultation with relevant personnel, identify a range of techniques to improve stamina, strength and flexibility
  • Set realistic physical conditioning goals aimed at improving own dance technique
  • Identify risk factors that may inhibit the achievement of goals and seek professional advice as required
  • Take fatigue and personal limitations into account when undertaking physical conditioning program
  • Perform warm-up and warm-down activities in conjunction with dance activities
  • Ensure that clothing and footwear are appropriate for exercise regime and practising dance technique
       
Element: Build on basic cultural dance technique
  • Ensure appropriate performance preparation
  • Demonstrate correct posture and body alignment appropriate to the dance technique and movement
  • Demonstrate isolation and coordination of upper and lower body in simple movement sequences
  • Apply a range of techniques that integrate balance, flexibility, stamina, weight transfer and articulation of individual body parts
  • Apply control and attention to detail when performing short simple phrases of dance movements
  • Incorporate basic awareness of customs relevant to dance styles into performances
  • Further develop connectivity and interaction with other dancers as required
  • Incorporate musicality, phrasing and correct timing as choreographed into performances to show relationship between cultural dance styles and accompanying music or other media

Evidence of the ability to:

improve cultural dance technique over a six to twelve-month period

perform a range of basic cultural dance techniques in a learning environment

follow safe dance practices

use terminology associated with chosen cultural dance style correctly.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

explain and demonstrate how the musical elements of time signatures, beat, tempo and syncopation apply to cultural dance technique

describe the philosophy and main historical periods of chosen cultural dance style.
