Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and produce functional or artistic glass objects using kiln casting techniques. It involves research to develop designs and refinement of kiln casting technique through experimentation and dedicated practice. It applies to those visual artists who are highly skilled in the specific techniques for kiln cast glasswork and who realise an individual professional style and a coherent body of creative work. They work with a high level of independence seeking mentoring and guidance as required. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

equipment, tools and materials used to produce kiln cast glass objects

relevant information sources.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Evidence of the ability to:

research an extensive range of historical and contemporary kiln cast glasswork and techniques to inform own designs

refine the use of kiln casting techniques through a process of thorough experimentation and practice to create a coherent body of kiln cast glasswork which:

shows a command of chosen techniques in both single works and multiples of related works

demonstrates the development of an individual style

supports own ideas for work.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe intellectual property requirements relevant to producing glassworks

summarise the main aspects of historical and contemporary kiln cast glassworking practice and how they can inform own design ideas

describe, for the elements and principles of design, the detailed characteristics, complex interrelationships, use in kiln cast glasswork and how they may be challenged

describe the features and use of:

open moulds

investment (closed) moulds

flat, tall and hollow forms

thin and thick casts

simple and complex forms

explain the factors to consider when planning firing schedules

explain the features of these kiln casting techniques and how they work to achieve different effects in kiln cast glasswork:

structural support for large scale work

making and joining modules

refractory mould-making techniques

combining kiln cast glass with glass components made using other techniques

adding colour to the casting glass

finishing techniques

This section specifies different work environments and conditions that may affect performance. Essential operating conditions that may be present (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) are included.

Firing schedules must take into account

complexity of the form and its mould

glass manufacturer’s recommended annealing schedules

material condition of the mould

number of moulds in the kiln

thickness of the form

type of glass being used

type of kiln being used

whether mould is open or closed.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
