Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake basic repairs to and maintain lighting equipment and accessories used in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries.At this level, individuals are required to use some discretion and judgement and operate under broad supervision within an established framework of plans and procedures.In some States and Territories of Australia, a restricted electrical licence is required to repair and maintain production equipment. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like for like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.Testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be carried out by a person with the relevant certificate of competency in accordance with the performance specifications of:Australian Standard 3760: 200 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipmentAustralian Standard 3002: 1985 Electrical installations - shows and carnivals.In some States and Territories a licensed electrician would be required to undertake the tasks outlined in Element 2.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to productions that require lighting.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Undertake routine maintenance tasks
  • Clean and maintain equipment, cables and accessories according to organisational procedures
  • Conduct safety checks on equipment according to manufacturer instructions and work health and safety (WHS) guidelines
  • Check and replace spares and consumables and ensure production equipment is ready and available to productions at specified locations
  • Complete required documentation to ensure accurate records of checked and maintained items, and provide copies to relevant personnel

  • Isolate fault to specific equipment or parts of equipment using fault detection procedures, and determine nature of repair requirements
  • Tag faulty production equipment according to organisational procedures
  • Make minor repairs to faulty equipment according to safety requirements, manufacturer instructions and level of own responsibility
  • Refer complex repairs to technical specialists or licensed personnel
  • Where appropriate, have technical specialists pilot repairs from a remote location
  • Discuss faults and repair needs with technical specialists, demonstrating correct use of terminology

2.4 Make minor repairs to faulty equipment according to safety requirements, manufacturer instructions and level of own responsibility

2.5 Refer complex repairs to technical specialists or licensed personnel

3. Document work activity

3.3 Review repair and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with legislation

Evidence of the ability to:

use appropriate tools to undertake routine repairs and maintenance on lighting equipment and accessories

apply logical fault detection procedures

follow work health and safety procedures when testing and maintaining lighting equipment

locate relevant information in service and technical manuals when undertaking repair and maintenance tasks

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

explain typical maintenance needs and schedules for commonly used lighting equipment

explain the type of cleaning agents to use with different equipment

explain techniques and processes for detecting and repairing common faults in lighting equipment

describe common spare parts and sub-assemblies used when repairing and maintaining lighting equipment

explain the consequences of not operating and maintaining lighting equipment in optimal condition

explain how the following electrical concepts apply when repairing and maintaining lighting equipment:

voltage

current resistance

insulation

power sources (AC/DC)

explain the following legal and licensing issues that impact on the repair and maintenance of equipment:

the role of the restricted electrical licence

testing and tagging certification

limitations on the type of work that can be undertaken without a licence

describe duty of care and public safety issues in relation to the safe use of lighting equipment.
