Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and use computer based technology to develop simple musical pieces.It applies to individuals who apply knowledge of musical styles, elements and structures to create musical pieces, using computer based technology as the primary development tool. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

industry current electronic media used to develop musical works.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Prepare to develop music using electronic media
  • Discuss with relevant people ways in which digital equipment can be used to develop music
  • Explore music-making features of software applications and computer-based technology in practice sessions
  • Decide the purpose of musical pieces to be developed, and agree a delivery timeline with relevant people
  • Identify appropriate musical styles, elements and forms/structures to suit the purpose of the musical pieces
  • Identify the range of instruments and playing techniques to suit the style/mood of the musical pieces
  • Identify standard melody conventions to be used in the musical pieces

  • Ensure that musical input maintains style of music being created
  • Listen to work in progress with appropriate people, and seek feedback on creative and technical aspects of the musical pieces

  • Use notation features of software to set down musical pieces as required
  • Apply copyright notice to the song/musical piece with the name of the songwriter and year of first publication
  • Present all musical pieces in required file format by agreed deadline

develop a selection of simple musical works for specific puposes using electronic media, and deliver the completed pieces within an agreed timeline

use appropriate musical techniques and conventions to match each work to its purpose

discuss work with others and use feedback to improve musical piece

use correct processes to protect copyright.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain features of standard hardware and software tools/packages for developing and notating music

outline the issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of developing music using electronic media and ways of overcoming them

explain safe practices for listening and using a computer and keyboard for long periods of time.
