Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to analyse music in formulating conclusions about the aesthetic, technical and expressive characteristics of music.It applies to individuals who have high level skills in aural discrimination, music appreciation and artistic judgement. Performing musicians, music writers, music performance curators, and festival and concert programmers may apply these skills and knowledge to their professional practice. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

opportunities to apply the analysis of music in a practical context

printed scores or recorded performances as required by the specialisation to be assessed.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

  • Discuss with appropriate people the purpose and scope of the music analysis brief
  • Determine appropriate methodologies for analysing music in the context of the required task
  • Confirm the musical styles, genres and historical/cultural contexts of the selected music to be analysed
  • Clarify timelines for completion of analysis and factors that may impact on the analysis

describe musical elements and explain ways in which they can be used to achieve different aesthetic, technical and/or expressive musical outcomes.
