Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop control of the range of scope of own voice, techniques to enhance vocal quality and health, as well as strategies for developing the technical skills required to perform a range of repertoire with confidence.It applies to individuals who perform as vocalists and are developing competence to perform in public. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

relevant accompaniment, instruments and/or equipment

suitable acoustic space

opportunities to demonstrate improvement in vocal techniques.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Explore the range of own voice
  • Research the basic physiology and anatomy of the human voice in consultation with appropriate people
  • Develop control of the range and scope of voice, and apply to performance
  • Explore repertoire options that best fit own voice and vocal style
       
Element: Care for own voice
  • Identify physical problems that can affect the voice, and discuss with appropriate people ways to minimise their occurrence
  • Discuss with appropriate people strategies for addressing problems if they arise
  • Develop and use regular voice warm-up and warm-down routines to prepare for practice sessions and performances
       
Element: Develop vocal techniques
  • Consult with appropriate people to plan practice strategies to overcome technical challenges
  • Apply music knowledge to facilitate development of vocal techniques
  • Learn and practise a set of exercises and/or studies that systematically develops technical fluency in identified areas of weakness
  • Memorise lyrics and repertoire to advance performance skills
  • Incorporate safe and healthy performance habits into practice by using correct posture, body positions and care of the voice in line with work health and safety (WHS) principles
  • Seek feedback on own skill development from appropriate people, and adjust focus of practice sessions as required

Evidence of the ability to:

perform a selected set of exercises and/or studies according to safe and healthy work practices

perform at least three pieces by memory demonstrating:

adjusting intonation

use of musical techniques to enhance performance

develop plans for own skill development.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe physiology and anatomy of the human voice relevant to voice range and scope, and vocal techniques

describe physical problems that may affect voice, and explain how to care for voice

describe relevant repertoire to the selected area of specialisation

describe exercises for developing vocal technique

outline health and safety principles as they apply to vocal performance.
