Use casting and moulding techniques to make props

Version 1.0
Issue Date: March 2024

Qualification -
Unit of Competency CUAPRP402 - Use casting and moulding techniques to make props
Description
Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct props for theatre and screen productions using casting and moulding techniques.Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for making props using casting and moulding techniques. They may also be responsible for supervising others. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

casting and moulding materials

prop specifications.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria
Element: Determine prop requirements
  • Confirm prop production requirements in consultation with relevant colleagues and with reference to props documentation
  • Decide which casting and moulding techniques are best suited to the types of props required

Element: Prepare for prop construction
  • Select most appropriate mould based on an analysis of how prop items are to be used and the advantages and disadvantages of different options
  • Take budget and timelines into account when making decisions about constructing props
  • Select tools, equipment and materials appropriate to the casting or moulding technique to be used
  • Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible

Element: Construct props
  • Use techniques, tools and materials to create moulds and casts, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times
  • Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish and suitability for production requirements
  • Seek feedback on work in progress and adjust techniques as required
  • Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements
  • Contribute to evaluation of prop construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance

Evidence Required

List the assessment methods to be used and the context and resources required for assessment. Copy and paste the relevant sections from the evidence guide below and then re-write these in plain English.

Elements

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance Criteria

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Determine prop requirements

1.1 Confirm prop production requirements in consultation with relevant colleagues and with reference to props documentation

1.2 Decide which casting and moulding techniques are best suited to the types of props required

2. Prepare for prop construction

2.1 Select most appropriate mould based on an analysis of how prop items are to be used and the advantages and disadvantages of different options

2.2 Take budget and timelines into account when making decisions about constructing props

2.3 Select tools, equipment and materials appropriate to the casting or moulding technique to be used

2.4 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible

3. Construct props

3.1 Use techniques, tools and materials to create moulds and casts, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times

3.2 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish and suitability for production requirements

3.3 Seek feedback on work in progress and adjust techniques as required

3.4 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements

3.5 Contribute to evaluation of prop construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance

Evidence of the ability to:

use casting and moulding techniques to produce a range of props that meet the requirements of at least two productions

follow safety procedures

meet work deadlines

work collaboratively.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.

To complete the unit requirements the individual must:

describe the properties and applications of materials commonly used for casting and moulding

provide reasons for the use of particular materials and techniques for different production requirements

provide examples of different types of moulds

describe issues and challenges that typically arise when using casting and moulding techniques to construct props, and suggest ways to address them

describe safety and environmental issues associated with materials and equipment used in casting and moulding.

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.

Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.
