Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a broadcast studio panel.It applies to individuals who are responsible for ensuring that all audio inputs are mixed smoothly in line with program requirements for live to air broadcasts. They work closely with other presenters and guests, providing them with cues prior to opening microphones.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

a basic broadcast studio

production documentation

interaction with others.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

Element: Prepare for broadcast
  • Check studio equipment is safe and operational, and report any non-functioning equipment according to station procedures and work health and safety requirements
  • Identify and rectify simple problems, referring those beyond one’s own responsibilities to relevant people
  • Confirm in advance that all pre-recorded material is ready for broadcast
  • Confirm that external sources required by the program are available from point of origin to studio panel desk
  • Check that arrangements for recording and linking live sources meet production requirements
  • Conduct sound check and adjust as necessary in line with station procedures, health and safety, and production requirements
       
Element: Mix audio inputs on air
  • Mix audio inputs through the studio panel to produce required sound level and tonal balances
  • Execute sound cues according to production requirements
  • Cue and play presentation material according to program schedule
  • Cue studio guests as required and open microphones
  • Deal with operational problems of equipment promptly and effectively throughout onair sessions
  • Follow instructions from relevant people during live sessions as required
  • Complete program on time and hand over to next presenter as required

Evidence of the ability to:

set up and operate a studio panel using a full range of audio inputs on at least three occasions according to station procedures, health and safety, and production requirements

collaborate with others in a broadcast production environment

follow station procedures for archiving materials, completing documentation and checking equipment at the conclusion of broadcasts.

Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided at least once.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

explain the process for referring technical faults and problems to relevant people in a broadcast production environment

explain the issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of operating a broadcast studio panel in a live to air situation, and how to address them

explain the basic principles of audio mixing in a broadcast production environment, including how to maintain consistent audio levels throughout a radio broadcast

outline the work health and safety (WHS) requirements as they relate to the operations of a broadcast studio.
