Learning Outcomes and Application This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to write music related material in response to a writing brief.It applies to individuals, such as freelance writers or journalists, who would be expected to write both original and non-narrative music content for a range of purposes, including reviews, critiques, program notes, editorials, commentary and music copy.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:

writing briefs

music related information sources.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

  • Identify factors that may impact writing assignment, and plan accordingly
  • Determine style and tone appropriate to publication for which material is being written
  • Discuss plans or preliminary ideas with relevant people as required

  • Use appropriate information sources to gather background material,
  • Conduct interviews with people to gather information as required
  • Review gathered information to determine approach to writing assignment

  • Work in accordance with work health and safety (WHS) and copyright legislation
  • Confirm language and writing style are suited to target audience and publication
  • Confirm specialised vocabulary is appropriate to writing brief and subject matter
  • Proofread and edit material to required standard, and check that it meets requirements of writing brief
  • Present draft to relevant people for review
  • Adjust material as required, and present final copy in agreed format and timeframe
  • Evaluate writing process, assess own performance, and note areas for future improvement

produce materials that meet the requirements of a writing brief, including carrying out research, generating content ideas, collaborating with others and meeting deadlines

use music vocabulary, correct grammar, punctuation and writing style.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe the information that is typically found in a writing brief

describe the copyright requirements that relate to use of information sources in written materials

list and describe appropriate information sources for research purposes.
