Description This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to develop and refine techniques for working with metal for a range of artistic and craft purposes. The unit focuses more on the technical rather than creative or aesthetic quality of the work, and it includes the requirement for a broad range of metal-working skills.
Employability Skills This unit contains employability skills.
Learning Outcomes and Application Any visual artist or designer who uses metal in their work must develop some technical proficiency with metal-working tools and materials. This technical proficiency is not equivalent to that of a metals tradesperson. Work must be undertaken according to safety requirements.This work is undertaken independently with some guidance and mentoring available as required.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

  • Establish technical specifications and creative parameters for metalwork
  • Select and set up materials, tools and equipment following all safety requirements and instructions
  • Calculate correct quantities of materials, avoiding wastage where possible

  • Cut, bend and shape metal to specification using correct tools and following all required safety procedures
  • Apply soldering, brazing and welding techniques following all required safety procedures
  • Achieve different outcomes and effects through safe experimentation with various media and materials
  • Recognise and resolve metalwork technical and design problems
  • Achieve precision and accuracy in use of metal-working techniques
  • Apply safe strategies for the use, maintenance and storage of metal-working tools and equipment

Method of assessment

A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct observation of the candidate using metal-working techniques

questioning and discussion about candidate’s work processes

review of portfolios of evidence

review of third-party reports from experienced practitioners.

Assessment methods should closely reflect workplace demands (e.g. literacy) and the needs of particular groups (e.g. people with disabilities, and people who may have literacy or numeracy difficulties, such as speakers of languages other than English, remote communities and those with interrupted schooling).
